Management

Urban Rec is run and organized by a dedicated team of full time staff including Steve Laing, Chris McNally, Dale Matsuda, Nazim Hasham, Jason Margolus, Mike Statten, Christine Leathem, & Jason MacCulloch.

In addition to the full time staff, Urban Rec has between 45-100 volunteer event coordinators at various event venues to help make sure that everyone is having a great time out there.

Here is a little more about each of our full time staff.

A managing partner of Urban Rec, Steve has worked extensively at both UBC and SFU in the Recreation and Athletics departments organizing and executing special events, tournaments and sporting leagues. He has had experience with such international events as the Air Canada Championship Golf Tournament and several international collegiate sporting championships in swimming, track, and field. A lifelong sports fan Steve can usually be found watching or playing sports everywhere he goes. Steve is a graduate of UBC.

Chris founded Max Fun Sports & Entertainment in 2001 and quickly established it as a top notch sports and social club with a creative flair for new events and a participant focus.

In 2003 Chris partnered with Steve Laing to bring Max Fun to the next level, which they did when in 2004 Max Fun Merged with Vancouver Sport.com to form what is today known as Urban Rec. Chris is a lifelong sports fan and very active in a variety of sports. He holds a B.A.Sc and an MBA from UBC and is married to his wife Amanda and has two children Jacob and Penelope.

After a 5-year stint in Japan coaching volleyball and playing hockey, Dale joined the Urban Rec ranks as a League Manager. After learning the ropes, Dale has taken on the reigns of overseeing league operations. An avid sports enthusiast, Dale can be found playing ice hockey, golf, and volleyball year-round. Dale's previous experience at the University of British Columbia provides him with an ideal background for taking Urban Rec Leagues and events to the next level. Dale is a graduate of UBC (B.Sc.).

Naz, as his friends call him, has been part of the Urban Rec family since April 2009. After a productive career in the Telecommunications industry, Naz moved on to a more leisure oriented industry. After a very successful season as the Urban Beach Manager in April 2009, he has been the manager of all the Vancouver and Richmond leagues. He has also been key in making those legendary Urban Rec events and parties just that, legendary. Naz is someone you can talk to about our leagues, events, or just to shoot the breeze.

A hard core Canucks fan, Naz brings a positive attitude and unbridled enthusiasm to the Urban Rec Team! Look for Naz at your league night, special event, or party.

Jason was more than thrilled to join the Urban Rec team in August of 2013. Playing sports his entire life, Jason brings with him a wealth of both competitive and recreation sporting experiences. His energy and sense of humor, and passion for sports make him the ultimate 'team guy'.

After growing up playing minor, junior, and university hockey as a goalie, he now enjoys a more recreational approach to his sports. You will often find him on various softball fields, golf courses, and tennis courts during the day, and supporting local clubhouses while enjoying his Canucks, Red Sox, and NFL teams at night. Jason graduated from the University of Victoria with his B.Sc in Kinesiology, and is looking to continue his studies through an MBA in Sports Management.

Mike has been an active member in the Urban Rec community for a few years as both a player and Event Coordinator. An avid volleyball and softball player, Mike is excited to be a League and Events Manager so he can bring his passion for recreational sports and the people that participate in them to all the gyms, fields, and beaches in and around the lower mainland.  In addition to his League Management Duties Mike has recently taken on the role of Urban Rec administrator where he oversees the flow of information to our participants as well makes sure the rest of the Urban Rec Team is ready to provide a recreational sports and social expereince that is second to none!

Christine joined the Urban Rec team as a League Manager after over a year of playing and EC'ing with our outdoor soccer and multi-sport leagues. She grew up playing many different sports, but eventually found her fit in soccer and later on earned herself a scholarship to play at a Division I school down in the U.S. Christine is excited to bring her passion for sports to others in the Urban Rec community and to learn and grow while doing what she loves.

When she's not on the field, you can find Christine stretching it out at a hot yoga class, finding a new trail to hike, or binge-watching the latest Netflix series (Suits, anyone?). She's always up for an adventure and will never say no to a good time.

Jason grew up in a sport family and developed a passion for sports at an early age. Playing a variety of sports growing up, Jason pursued a degree in Kinesiology from UBC. While at UBC, Jason was involved in the intramural program facilitating sport leagues and events for students. Jason took his experience at UBC and his love of sport and started at Urban Rec in September 2016. He is excited to bring his previous experience to Urban Rec and help others in the community enjoy sports as much as he does.

In his spare time you can find Jason checking in on his Canucks, Whitecaps and Blue Jays, hiking up the Grouse Grind or trying to seek out something new and exciting to do in this beautiful city.

Robbie Stew is known to almost all Urban Rec participants and has seen it all when it comes to Urban Rec.  He has taken on a new Role as a consultant with UR as he focusses on family life. Although Rob is not in the office regularily he is still a strong presence within the planning of Urban Rec Leagues, Events and leagues.  He now spends most of his days with his daughter as she prepares for the next big steps in her life with Kindergarden just around the corner.
