Urban Rec Return to Play Protocol for Softball

Return to Play Plan – Adult Recreational Slo-Pitch Softball

On June 15, 2020, Softball BC’s Back To Bases – Return To Play Guidelines and Protocols were released.  While Urban Rec has no direct afilliation with, nor are subject to governance by Softball BC, this document forms the foundation upon which the Urban Rec Slo-Pitch Softball Return to Play protocols have been developed.  These protocols will be updated periodically as the situation requires.

Pre-Arrival Health Check:

Each day before each session of play, each Group Leader will be sent an email to remind them to confirm with their group that all participants planning to attend can answer “NO” to the following 3 questions:

  1. Have you experienced any symptoms of COVID-19 (including fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat and painful swallowing) over the last 5 days?
  2. Have you travelled to any country outside Canada within the last 14 days?
  3. Have you provided care, or had contact with a person confirmed to have COVID-19, in the last 5 days?
Limit Participation:
  • Only players that are Urban Rec members and have completed all requirements of being added to the group roster, including accepting all Waivers, Addendums and Terms and Conditions of play, may be in attendance at the field.
  • A maximum of 14 players per group will be allowed, no spectators may be on the field.
  • A maximum of 2 groups (totaling 28 participants) and 2 Urban Rec Staff will be allowed to be in attendance at a standard softball field.
Signage:
  • Signage posted at each venue supplementing any existing signage to ensure the following elements are included:
    • Health Check 3 Questions @ Entrance
    • Arrival/departure procedure @ all potential points of entry/exit
    • Reminders to maintain Social Distancing @ all potential points of entry/exit

Participant Guidelines – Adult Recreational Slo-Pitch Softball

Personal Protection/Hygiene:
  • The use of a mask is recommended for all participants
  • Participants must avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth
  • Participants must cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and apply hand sanitizer immediately after a coughing or sneezing event.
  • Always maintain current physical distancing standards from others
  • Be mindful of common surfaces and limit touch points
Equipment:
  • Each team will be responsible to provide their own ball while they are playing in the field (Urban Rec will provide all softball groups with at least 2 balls)
    • The ball should be wiped with disinfectant before each new inning or play period
  • The use of individual bats is recommended
    • Having multiple team bats that can be sanitized between uses is a safe alternative
  • Participants must clean footwear and equipment with an appropriate disinfectant
  • Come prepared to play! Do not change at the field - No access to washrooms/change rooms
  • Bring your own water bottle - Do not share any drinks or food
Arrival/Departure at the Field:
  • Participants can arrive at the diamond/park no more than 5 minutes before scheduled play time
  • Absolutely no congregating at the park, facility or parking area before or after your play
  • Do not enter the diamond/park area until ALL other groups have left the field
  • Follow the Entry & Exit plans as designated by Urban Rec and/or the Venue
    • Once you enter the field go directly to your groups’ designated area
  • At the end of your play, immediately leave the field following the appropriate exit plan
  • Collect all garbage/recycling and place it in the appropriate bins after the play
Mindful Participation:
  • Review guidelines in advance of arrival
  • Listen to, and follow, the direction of Urban Rec Staff at all times
  • Review and adhere to directions posted via onsite signage
  • Pre-sanitize hands and equipment before play
  • Stay within your designated areas at the diamond/park
  • Do not linger around the field area after your play

UR Staff Guidelines – Adult Recreational Slo-Pitch Softball

Equipment:
  • Each staff member will be provided
    • Mask (welcome to use their own as long as it covers their mouth and nose)
    • Staff Clothing (must be worn)
    • Access to gloves
    • Hand sanitizer
    • Whistle
    • Individual binder for each staff for notes and record keeping.
Training:
  • Each staff member will go through a training procedure on how to run each specific venue
    • Participants encouraged to wear masks
    • How to conduct captain’s meeting
    • How to deal with discipline at the venue
    • How to deal with first aid
    • When and how to disinfect equipment
Communication:
  • UR Staff are empowered to request any participant to immediately leave the venue should they display any symptoms of COVID-19 or if behavior is not in keeping with safe and healthy play
    • Re-ask the participant the ‘3 Health Check Questions’
    • Staff may ask entire group to leave if behavior from one or more group member is not in keeping with safe and healthy play
First Aid Plan:

In the event that first aid is required to be administered during an activity, all persons attending to the injured individual must first put on a mask and gloves.

Phase 1 Return to Play Activities: Slo-Pitch Softball Training

Tentatively in place through June 30th, 2020.

In alignment with the Softball BC a typical Urban Rec Softball session would conform to the guidelines of the “BC Softball Return to Play Protocol”

  • Softball rules have been modified to ensure physical distancing standards before, during and after the session
  • Participants will be on the field for a maximum of 90min
  • There will be no contact between any participants at any time
    • No hand shaking, no high-fiving,
  • All participants must keep 2 meters away from other participants.
  • All fielders should be at least 2 meters away from all other participants on the field before a pitch is thrown.
  • The catcher will stand a minimum of 2 meters away from the strike mat
  • Teams will perform batting practice and fielding drills
  • No ‘Dugouts’ or benches will be used during the game. Teams must set up in their designated Zone along the first and third baselines

Phase 2 Return to Play Activities: In Club Slo-Pitch Game Play

Timeline: Tentatively commencing July 1st, 2020.

Urban Rec is a club of member participants from local geographic regions central to the facilities in which we operate.

  • Softball game rules will be modified to ensure physical distancing standards before, during and after the session
  • Teams will be on the field for a maximum of 90min
  • There will be no direct contact between any participants at any time.  Incidental contact is to be minimized at all times
    • No hand shaking, no high-fiving, etc.
  • All fielders should be at least 2 meters away from all other participants on the field before a pitch is thrown
  • The on-deck batter needs to physical distance accordingly when warming up
  • It is recommended that there be no base coaches
  • The catcher will stand 2 meters behind the strike mat
  • No ‘Dugouts’ or benches will be used during the game. Teams must set up in their designated Zone along the first and third baselines
