Fortius Centre Monday- BB Rules

Basketball Instructions and Rules

  1. Game times start at on the hour sharp! (Check your schedule), please be at the courts 10 minutes before the start of your game.  Games consist of two 25-minute halves with a five minute half-time break. If both teams want to play through the half-time, it is at the discretion of the event coordinator. There are no timeouts permitted.
  2. Teams that can not field a team with 10 minutes of their start time will automatically forfeit the game. At the time it is encouraged that the teams mix the teams and play a fun game. Players who arrive late are allowed to play; however, the forfeit will not be reversed once a team has enough players to field a team.  If a team borrows players from their opposition to have a game, the game will be a forfeit loss for the team that was short players; however, it will not be considered a default.  If a game is not played, then it will be considered a default.
  3. Teams may avoid defaulting in regular season games by utilizing players from other teams that play in the league without penalty.  However, in the playoffs, this can only be done to avoid being subject to the default policy- the game will be considered a forfeit loss (but not a default) if a team utilizes players not on their roster to field a lineup.
  4. To be eligible to play in the Urban Rec basketball league all players must have signed an online waiver. Players that do not sign an online waiver will not be issued membership cards and will not be allowed to play. Teams that do not fill out the online team rosters be the end of week 2 will be removed from the schedule until they do so and all players have signed the waiver.
  5. The on-site volunteer Event Coordinator (EC) may do a random ID check for players from any team.  If a team is found to be using an ineligible player (i.e. someone who has not indicated that they have read the online waiver), then that player’s team will forfeit the game if it has already begun.  If the game has not begun, then the game will not be a forfeit- that player is simply not permitted to participate until they have indicated they have read the online waiver.
  6. Playoffs Eligibility – all players must have played a minimum of 2 games over the regular season to be eligible to play in the playoffs. A team using an ineligible player will automatically forfeit the game. If a player shows up that is not on the team roster they will not be allowed to play regardless if they played or subbed during the regular season. All players must be on the roster even if they are subs.
  7. Teams are comprised of 5 players with at least 2 men and 2 women on the court. Teams need at least 4 players including a minimum of 1 member of each gender to avoid defaulting. Teams that do not have at least 1 member of each gender default the game (Teams should try to still play a game for fun).  Any team defaulting more than 2 games in a season may be asked to leave the league, with no refund.
  8. All players should bring a dark shirt and a light shirt to all games. No grey.  Teams should decide, prior to the start of the game, one team is dark and the other light.
  9. Games start with a jump ball, with either the Event Coordinator, or another team member, tossing the ball.
  10. Defensive play is man to man only - no zone defenses.
  11. NEW RULE –  Restrictive area. Urban Rec has extending the restricted area to the second hash mark from the foul line. Any player committing a blocking foul within this area will be assessed TWO fouls (as per NBA rules there are no charges within the restricted area).

Note: upon the team’s 6th and subsequent fouls the two foul penalty will still be assessed and two points will be awarded to the opposing team.

  12. Goaltending – A guy may not leave his feet to block a girl; if they do the basket will count. A guy may stick his hands straight in the air to play defense.
  13. Rotate players at your discretion. Sub in on the offensive only before the ball has crossed half court.
  14. Please check area for debris, puddles or dangerous obstacles
  15. All games are self-refereed.  Any infractions will be discussed amongst the two players involved only.  In the event of a foul, the ball is inbound from the top of the key by the non-offending team.
  16. FOULS- Each team shall be permitted five (5) team fouls per half.  Upon a team’s sixth (and subsequent) foul, the non-offending team shall be awarded one (1) point as well as possession of the ball following the foul.
  17. Please play safely in a sportsmanlike manner and with good spirit.  ANY ROUGH OR PHYSICAL PLAY WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE EXPULSION FROM FURTHER GAME PLAY.
  18. The over and back rule is in effect.  If a team plays the ball over the midcourt line and then plays the ball back across the line into their own half, the other team shall take possession on the sideline at centre court.
  19. In the event of a jumpball (two opponents are both holding possession of the ball for 3 seconds), the ball is awarded to the defense.
  20. Full court man-to-man pressure is permitted. Should a team lead the game by more 15 points or more, the full court pressure must be removed by the team that is leading
  21. All other standard basketball regulations apply.
  22. If two or more teams are tied in the standings at season’s end, the first tie-breaker will be the team with the higher winning percentage within division.  The second tie-breaker will be the team with the higher UR fun point average.  The 3rd tie-breaker will be head-to-head record against the other team(s) involved in the tie.
