Monday Urban Rec Bowling Rules

Bowling Rules

  1. Teams are comprised of 4 people with at least 1 member of each gender.  If teams are short a player (or even two), then they may still play without penalty provided they have at least 1 member of each gender present.  In the event a team is missing 1 person, then one person each frame will throw the balls for the missing player.  In this scenario, it does not have to be the same person throwing the extra balls as the game progresses, but the same person should throw the balls within the same frame.  If a team is missing 2 people, then the 2 people who are present shall each throw 4 balls each frame.

  2. If a team has more than 4 players, then they may sub in and out as the game progresses; however, only a maximum of 4 players can play per frame.

  3. A game will consist of 10 frames.  At the start of each frame per player, a full rack of 10 pins will be present.

  4. Each week, teams will play 2 games and the cumulative score of each 4-person team will be used to calculate their ranking for that week.

  5. In each frame, a player will throw 1 or 2 balls in an attempt to knock down as many pins as possible.  If the player succeeds in knocking down all 10 pins with their first ball, then this is a strike and the player’s turn is over until the next frame.  If the player does not get a strike, then they throw a second ball.  If they succeed in knocking all the pins down after throwing a second ball, then this is a spare.  If some pins remain standing after the second ball, then the player is awarded points for the number of pins that were knocked down.

Note that the rules regarding scoring are included below for reference- the bowling alley will have computer scoring on each lane that will automatically calculate how many points each player gets each frame.

  6. Scoring- No Strike or Spare: if some pins remain standing after the player’s 2nd ball of the frame, then they are awarded 1 point for each pin they knocked down.

  7. Scoring- Spare: If the player got a spare, then the player is awarded 10 points PLUS how many pins they knock down on the first ball of their next frame.  This amount will be entered as their score for the previous frame.  The pins knocked down by the first ball will also count towards their score for the present frame.

  8. Scoring- Strike: If the player got a strike, then the player is awarded 10 points PLUS how many pins they knock down on both balls of their next frame.  This amount will be entered as their score for the previous frame.  The pins knocked down by these balls will also count towards their score for the present frame.

  9. Final Frame- in the final frame (the 10th) of the game, each player may earn a 3rd ball to throw if they achieve a strike or a spare with their first 2 balls.  If the player does not get a spare/strike with their first 2 balls, then no 3rd roll is awarded.
